1912 was a great year for cigars, because it was during this year that the famous Arturo Fuente brand was born. Its birthplace is Ybor City, a Tampa, Florida locale, and now enjoys a cult following of cigar aficionados all over the world. Made by cigar bigwigs Carlos Fuente and his son Carlos Jr., every Fuente is known for very specific cigar-making processes, world-class materials, and, most importantly, distinct flavor. True to the Fuente tradition, each cigar is classified under three collections, and boasts of four individual brands that have conquered the tastes of cigar connoisseurs everywhere.

They’ve got the naturals, which are cigars specially-rolled in the premium Cameroon wrapper, and the Maduros, which are wrapped in an aged Connecticut Broadleaf. Then they have the prime Seleccion d’Oro collection that owes its well-balanced flavor to the special Connecticut Shade used.

Fuentes have become real icons in the cigar world, and these four extra-special names never fail to get attention wherever they are enjoyed:

The Fuente Hemingway, aged for an extra 140 days to give out that super-smooth flavor is a story in itself. Named after the legendary writer, this critically-acclaimed masterpiece is told in a Cameroon wrapper; the Classic, Signature and Untold Story are anything but fiction, each detailed in an intense Maduro that provides a counterpoint to the famed Cameroon.

Now, if you’ve decided to name a cigar after yourself, wouldn’t you make sure it trumps all others? That’s probably what Carlos Sr. thought when he created the proud Fuente Don Carlos. Needless to say, each of these noble brownmen are carried in premium, medium-bodied Cameroon wrappers and are constructed with much exclusivity and respect, to get the approval of the great Don.

Celebrities and legends who are rarely seen share this same quality with the Fuente Anejo—which made its appearance in 2000, and has eventually become hard to find. Anejos are wrapped in Connecticut Broadleaf Maduros, and are only made present to the deserving few.

Finally, the end-all and be-all of the storied Fuente cigar line—the Gran Reserva. In every Cameroon or Connecticut Shade-wrapped hand-rolled vintage tobacco is four generations of the Fuente family tradition, making the Gran Reserva undoubtedly the most rare, expensive, and desired cigar the world over.

I hate running with the crowd, but I have to agree on this one: it’s a killer. Short but powerful, and like the guy’s sentences, spare at first glance but packed with complexity. Full-size prize for a small-size cigar, but worth it.
